Meet Our Director
Shirley is a dynamic, talented musical leader and world renowned as a musical educator and vocal coach. She joined Sweet Adelines International in 1961 and has been totally involved since that time. She is a Certified Sound Judge, Certified International Faculty Member, Master Director and International Vocal Coach. Along with her international travels and duties, she is currently serving on Region 12 Education Direction Committee and has served internationally as a member of the International Education Direction Committee and Chairman of an International Directors Seminar.
Shirley comes to Modesto as Director of River Lights Chorus having completed her tenure as Director of Greater Dallas Chorus, Texas, for 17 years, and Mission Valley Chorus in San Jose, California for 13 years.
In 1985, the Greater Dallas Chorus and her quartet, “Star Attraction”, toured New Zealand, Australia and Hawaii, bringing top level performances to those areas.
She has been an annual traveler to New Zealand coaching and teaching throughout the country since 1986. During her time as coach in residence in 2007, she visited most every Sweet Adelines chorus in New Zealand, taught seminars, and visited many schools to encourage barbershop youth programs.
Shirley’s teaching, organizational skill building techniques, and vocal coaching are widely sought after in both Sweet Adelines and the Barbershop Harmony Society quartets, choruses, and members. She has coached numerous international champions and medalists (quartets and choruses). She is an experienced international competitor and quartet performer, singing both lead and baritone in international competitive quartets during her career.
Shirley currently directs River Lights Chorus (2009 Region 12 Division A Champions). She is also a private vocal coach with studios in several northern California cities. She is a consummate student – attending workshops and seminars to hone her musical skills and sharing that knowledge with others.
She is the mother of 3 sons, grandmother of 12, and friend to many.
