MODESTO, CA, June 2026 — After a multi-year search, the all-women River Lights Chorus of Modesto has named Susan Smith as its new director, marking a turning point for the group as it rebuilds following several pandemic-era setbacks.
Founded in 2001, River Lights has long been a fixture at Modesto community and business events. The chorus is a chapter of SingUnited International and a member of Pacific Shores Region 12.
Like many performing groups, it faced a difficult stretch starting in 2020, when the pandemic interrupted rehearsals, the previous director retired soon after, and a number of longtime members eventually stepped back or moved on to other musical pursuits.
With new leadership in place, the chorus is now regrouping and actively recruiting from Modesto, Manteca, and surrounding Central Valley communities.
Susan Smith joined River Lights in mid-February, bringing more than 35 years of experience in the four-part barbershop harmony that defines Sweet Adelines worldwide. Her competitive credits include a fourth-place International Chorus medal with the Pacific Empire Chorus in 1993, a second-place Regional quartet medal in 1994, a top-15 International chorus finish in 2019, and back-to-back top-10 International quartet finishes in 2023 and 2024.
"River Lights has such a wonderful history in this community, and I see real momentum building again," Smith said. "We're looking for women who love to sing, whether they're seasoned performers or have never sung in a group before. If you've ever wanted to try four-part harmony, this is your invitation."
River Lights aims to audition 20 new singers by late fall and grow back toward the 30-plus membership it once enjoyed. Membership includes both group and private vocal instruction, and no prior barbershop experience is required.
The chorus will host an Open Audition Night on Tuesday, July 21. Prospective members are also welcome to drop in on any regular rehearsal, held Tuesdays at 6:30 - 8:30 PM at 1705 Sherwood Avenue, Modesto CA 95350.
